I hold a grade 8 in the piano and ive taught hundreds of people to play the piano and keyboard in my time. Piano is one of the harder instruments to master, requiring parallel reading of at most 6 notes playing at the same time, and having one of the most varied note shapes (if you ever compare kinderszenen for piano and greensleeves for guitar, you will understand.

I'd say, if you wanted to get to that level, practising 2 hours a day would be beneficial. You may have been playing piano for a few years, and you can probably play chords easily. Even though you might be able to finish learning theory and theory of the technique required to play piano, it is almost impossible to learn to play piano from scratch to grade 8 in 1 year (unless you practice 12 hours a day).
If you study 20 minutes per day, every day, then grade 6 will take 390 days, or just over a year, however, you are likely to find it less complicated as you go along, so your maximum daily study time. Then tuck your thumb under finger number 3 while its holding the note e down, and place your thumb on the next note, f, bringing the other fingers to rest over the next set of notes. Well, you see, it isnt like an academic qualification.
For me, it completely depends on many factors. When you have reached a certain level, you can expect to be able to master any piece at that level with just a few weeks of practice. Since performing music is very much a physical skill as well as a mental one, adult beginners may well make slower progress initially.
A student who has achieved a good pass, merit or distinction at grade 5 will be an extremely competent pianist able to read music and play a whole variety of pieces from classical through to pop and jazz. It took me a long time (got it when i was 18) simply because i learnt from a young age but never had a problem. Using the right hand alone, start with your thumb on middle c. If you want to pass the grade 8 exam, then 3 years will do, but you will just get a pass.
This is where quick studies come in. For example, if you have already played the violin to a grade 8 standard, you will be able to pick the piano up very quickly, to the point where it might only take you two years to be at the same level with your piano playing. Grade 8 is the final graded exam available from the associated board of the royal schools of music (abrsm).
I can read music, but it takes me a long time to learn new sheet music. Unlike studying to become a doctor, or getting a degree in history, heres no fixed length course of study that results in getting to the required level in a certain number of years. You need 100 marks to achieve pass, 120 marks to pass with merit and 130 marks to pass with distinction.
Your knowledge of harmony and composition techniques are tested in a theoretical and practical sense, and you're expected to have experienced a wide range of scores of many genres of music. It is possible to learn a piece a few levels higher than your current level, but it may takes months of practice. But then again, i guess it depends how fast you learn, im a slow learner so i spend lots of time practising.
I can certainly play through most anything after one week, but to really master a piece can take anywhere from 1 to 6 months, depending on so many variables. In my experience, it normally takes 2 to 3 years to play to a competent level (approximately grades 2/3 of the abrsm exam system). Many systems of piano study are organized with 10 levels or grades.
Furthermore, there are people who have finished grade 8 but are still taking lessons because learning never stops. To actually reach grade 8 level, it will take more than that. My biggest hurdle seems to be memorization.
Please have a read through the mock exam to see what level your child is currently playing at and what grade they can expect on the day. I consider myself an intermediate player and was wondering how long it takes you guys to learn pieces. This will normally take around 5 to 7 years to achieve.

Crucially, however long it takes to accomplish basic skills, hopefully you will enjoy the musical journey, which will inspire continuation. From grade 1 at about age 8 or 9, up to grade 8 at age 17 or so. I am grade 8 and 20 years old.
It provides a lot of joy and excitement in my life. This advanced level exam is an enjoyable challenge for most students. Depends on how much you can practice, and your previous musical experiences.
